One of my colleague who is works as a Marketing Coordinator is leaving us for another job. So my HR sent out an email yesterday saying that they are intending to source for the someone internally to replace her. Of course they will still be looking for other candidates outside but I think they are hoping someone internally will be able to fill up the position.
Frankly, I was kind of surprised to hear this piece of news. From what I know, I have never hear my company looking for people internally to fill up a position for an associate. Managers yes, but as for associate level, they usually prefer to look outside. I heard from Sam that the main reason is because they seem to be having difficulties hiring a "satisfactory" candidate from outside. So they are thinking of having a change and source internally first.
I am interested in applying for the job. I had been thinking about whether to leave my company to pursue a career in Marketing for quite some time already. However, I am kind of hesitating over this too. I have an interest in doing lab work and also marketing which is why I went and took an Advanced Diploma in Strategic Marketing a few years back. The thing is, I enjoy doing what I am doing now but I do feel like trying out how it feels to work for another company or do something else as this is currently still my first job. I do know that if ever I intend to change job, no matter whether it is still in technical field or maybe to marketing field, I will definitely suffer a pay cut.
In a way the opening of this position is like a dream come true for me. If I apply for the marketing job and manage to get it, I will be doing something different and if I intend to continue working in this line, at least I will have some prior experience already. But I know I will definitely miss working in the lab. Especially when I have a good working relationship with my managers and my other colleague.
I am in a dilemma now. Think I will need to have a talk with my manager before I decide what I want to do. Let's see what advice he will give me even though I know ultimately, I am the only one who must make the last decision.
