I came across this article that someone posted in SPUG about a taxi driver who waived the 35% peak hour surcharge in order to get passengers.
I was thinking how ironic this is as it seems that instead of helping the drivers to earn more income from the recent fare hike, the drivers are earning less as they are unable to get passengers.
I can't help but notice each time I pass by a taxi stand after my work, there's actually a quene of taxis waiting to pick up passengers. You will definitely not be able to see this sight a few weeks ago before the fare hike. I still remember I used to have to resort to booking a taxi in order to make sure I can get a cab after work. Even then, I had to try and dial the number repeatedly in order to get through the call center and hold on to the line for another 10 minutes or so to get the taxi number.
Times have changed a lot since 3 weeks ago. Nowadays I even had to think for a while before flagging down a taxi. I still stop and think twice if I really need to take the taxi or if I can just take other forms of transport. I hope the fare hike for public transport will not come so soon. After all, I hope that at least there will still be a form of transport that will remain affordable...
